After I've installed the bookmarklet (at the top of each folder of bookmarks, which took a while), I wanted to make sure I could delete the application. I'm guessing I can, and will probably try, but it may help others to provide an answer.
PS your email address didn't work (even as find.in.page.app@gmail.com
I am using 3.0 firmware and can't update (I've tried and it goes into recovery mode loop, I've even tried restoring), and would like this functionality. Whenever I try to buy app, it says that I need to update to 3.1.2 How can I get the app.
"I am using 3.0 firmware and can't update..." - I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with your iPhone... If you have an Apple store nearby, I would strongly recommend taking it to a "genius" - not being able to use Find In Page may be the least of your worries if the device is acting up in this manner.
Unfortunately there is not much you can do to get the app onto an earlier version of the OS - it is compiled with 3.1.2 as the minimum requirement. I will have to re-compile it with different settings and submit an update to the App Store. In the meantime, you may want to get Find In Page LITE - it should work with 3.0 and above.
Sorry, Find In Page does not work with PDF documents - only with regular web pages and text files. (Not for the lack of trying either - it is simply not possible AFAIK to add a toolbar to a PDF document in Safari).
So, as it stands now, if you try to invoke Find In Page on a PDF document, Safari will simply quit.
"Is fip iPod touch compatible?" - Yes, it should be as long as the OS version on your iPod touch is 3.1.2 or above (to check, please go to Settings > General > About and see the Version field).
I am not sure about the microphone requirement - that does not make sense to me either... must be some sort of a glitch in the App Store app. All I can say to that is that microphone definitely is NOT a requirement.
I need to be able to search PDF documents viewed in safari on an iPad. I love the way Find in Page works on the web pages. Is there any app that can do this or have you considered making an app or browser that can?
Michael, thank you for the positive review on the App Store. I am not aware of any way to add UI elements such as the Find In Page toolbar while a PDF document is loaded in Safari. I would love to add PDF search functionality, but it is just not possible from within Safari, AFAIK - you will need to get an external PDF downloader/reader app with built-in search (sorry I do not have one to recommend, just do the obvious on iTunes).
Thanks for the response. I have not been able to find a downloade that has a "find in page" in the browser and in the PDF reader. I found no way to add your app to ReaddleDocs' browser. If you can tell me how, it would solve a big problem. Thanks again
Michael, sorry I don't know how to help you on this one. You mentioned that you have ReaddleDocs - it claims to have full-text search as one of the PDF reader features in the app description on the App Store, so you shouldn't have to use my app with it. Find In Page is for webpages only, which means HTML and text - unfortunately no other media types are (or will ever be) supported. Once again, this is not for the lack of trying, but simply for technical reasons.
@jclerman: Ability to search inside PDF files is the most requested feature which unfortunately (as I explained several times in comments on this page) is not technically feasible. If you open Find In Page on a PDF document, Safari *will* close down.
On your second point, that's entirely up to the app creators - NYTimes can (and perhaps should) add search to their app, but a third-party app cannot add such a feature. The only reason Find In Page is possible in mobile Safari is because Safari is a *scriptable* app, i.e. it allows third-party scripts to be executed inside it via the bookmarklet route.
Nice app, works great, thanks! One question only: I tried Lite first, then I upgraded, now I have two task lines. Can I eliminate the Lite One? (I already dumped the Lite app.) Carlos
To answer your question: "I tried Lite first, then I upgraded, now I have two task lines. Can I eliminate the Lite One?". Yes, this is just a bookmark - if you no longer need the bookmark that you created using the LITE version, you can safely delete it - the other bookmark you created using the full version of Find In Page will not be affected in any way.
Hi, Thanks for the nice implementation! After using it a bit, I have two small feature requests:
1. When entering a search term into the prompt box, would it be possible to accept Return as the initiation indicator, instead of clicking OK?
2. When closing, I don't think that the confirmation is necessary, & would find it more pleasant if it simply closed. (The only state to lose is one's place in a sequence of results, & it doesn't seem *that* bad to lose this…)
You are most welcome, Perry, I am glad you find it useful!
Regarding the first request ("...accept Return ... instead of clicking OK") - this should work, except there is a bug in iOS. The prompt is a standard javascript box, and the Return key should work, but it unfortunately doesn't. Perhaps Apple will get around to fixing this. Sorry...
I am considering the second request - thanks for the feedback!
To answer your question: "Somehow, I lost the bookmark during a sync. When I go to the App store, it says it's already installed. How do I get the bookmark back?" -- if the App store tells you that the app is already installed, I assume you have the Find In Page app on your iPad and simply lost the bookmark in Safari. If that's the case, you need to re-create the bookmark the same way you originally created it (using the Find In Page app).
Unless I am missing something about your situation, this should solve your problem.
I've been using this terrific app for a while, can't live without it. Recently (can't remember exactly when), the dock sits so low on the page that less than half is visible above the bottom menu bar. I don't see other users commenting on this, so it doesn't appear to be a widespread issue. Any thoughts? I have a hard time tapping the forward and back buttons accurately - I keep hitting the items on the menu bar instead.
Great App - I'm using an iPhone 4, OS4.2. Can the "highlighted" text, as found by the 'Find in Page' App, be shown in a similar way to that of 'Apples' seached for found text (font, colour & border). This is only cosmetic, but would look neat.
The paid app works beautifully on my iPad. However, the forward and back arrows on my iPhone do not work and only generate a message asking if I want to close the app. It is an iPhone 4s with iOS 5.1 update today. I uninstalled the lite version before creating the bookmark with the paid version (used the lite bookmark and changed the URL address). How do I fix this?

Yes, you can, but I would recommend not to - just in case you accidentally destroy the bookmark and need to recreate it.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I did get your email, BTW :-)

ReplyDeleteIf I am viewing an adobe acrobat page in Safari, Find In Page crashes Safari. Is this normal behavior for your bookmarklet?

Is fip iPod touch compatible? The app store won't let me download it saying it requires a microphone. I did install the lite version successfully.

ReplyDeleteGreat app! Is there any chance of an enhanced icon for the iPad app, so it is as crisp as the other icons?
ReplyDeleteHELP, PLEASE:
ReplyDeleteGreat app, but it crashes in PDF pages.
It would be nice to have a similar app to search other apps such as NYTimes.

Hi!
ReplyDeletedoes it works on IOS4/iPh4?
"does it works on IOS4/iPh4?" - Yes, it does.
ReplyDeleteOk thanks

An absolute essential for the iPad!
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I lost the bookmark during a sync. When I go to the App store, it says it's already installed.
How do I get the bookmark back?
Thanks,
Frank
Thank you, Frank.

Tried searching for the word "won't" on a page and it does not appear to work eve though the word is on the page.

very cool app. one annoying bug is that the dock sits "behind" some graphics. try it on your own page. the dock is hidden by your you tube videos.
ReplyDeleteWhen I paste the bookmark that is copied from the app I get the following message when I try to open it:
ReplyDelete"Javascript Error on Line 1. Undefined. TypeError: Result of expression 'document body' (null) is not an object.

ReplyDeleteI still use your "End of page" script; it's great on my iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
It no longer works on my iPad with ios8
